This workshop will give graduate students an overview of how to navigate the grant application process and prepare for award and project success. Graduate students are required to attend all four sessions. These sessions are virtual, and the Zoom information will be provided closer to the event date. Attendance is limited to the 100 registrants, first-come-first-served.

 

Workshop Objectives:

  • Understanding the preparation steps before beginning the writing process
  • Communicating the specific aims and approach clearly
  • Understanding how the grant proposal is reviewed and who the reviewers are
  • Learning how to budget, plan, and prepare for the scope of the project, and addressing the need.

Guest Speakers:

M.S. (Peg) AtKisson, PhD, trained in neuroscience, but in 2001 made her science grant proposal. and research development. She started the research development group at Tufts University, working on large, multi-investigator proposals. After eight years with Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, she left in 2017 to found ATG to create new approaches to grantsmanship training and developing integrated and holistic support for faculty research and leadership development. She still considers herself a neuroscientist first, and she still writes grant proposals. 

 

Amanda Welch earned a PhD from the University of Florida, and combines her passion for science and writing to assist researchers in clearly communicating their scholarly work. During her postdoctoral fellowship in molecular physics at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, she began assisting junior faculty members in grantsmanship and writing during and discovered that she could take this fulfilling experience and make it a full-time career. Amanda serves as the lead consultant for individual proposal development and is a key editor for complex proposal development. She also teaches the scientific manuscript development course where trainees complete the course with a full draft of a publication. Amanda assists in presenting grant training seminars and enjoys using new technologies to increase engagement during virtual seminars. Clients and colleagues appreciate Amanda's interest in using new technological solutions to increase engagement during virtual seminars and her calm nature under pressure.
