Topic: "The role of technology in the fight against human trafficking"

Guest Speaker: Dr. Laurie Giddens, Assistant Professor, Information Technology and Decision Sciences in the G. Brint Ryan College of Business

Description: In 2021, an estimated 28 million individuals worldwide were trapped in forced labor, a form of human trafficking, and compelled to work or perform services through force, fraud, or coercion. Dr. Giddens’ research, funded by the National Science Foundation, explores the role of technology in facilitating, detecting, and disrupting human trafficking networks. Specifically, she uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand how information technology is utilized in the criminal justice system to investigate and prosecute human trafficking cases and to identify machine learning techniques to detect human trafficking activity online.
