University of North Texas 
Water Research Field Station
The University of North Texas Water Research Field Station (WRFS) occupies 17.2 hectares
(42.4 acres) in Denton County, approximately four miles from campus. Established in
1987 on former agricultural land, the station provides a setting for controlled outdoor
experiments that connect laboratory research with the complexity of natural aquatic
ecosystems.
Facilities include 46 experimental ponds, portable cattle-tank mesocosm systems, an
artificial stream facility, and a laboratory building. Access to Hickory Creek provides
additional opportunities for field research and teaching. Together, these resources
support aquatic ecology research across multiple scales, from controlled experiments
to studies in natural habitats.
