Creative research is backed by UNT’s Institute for the Advancement of the Arts program

This is the first time UNT has earned this designation, which is given to HSI universities who have demonstrated noteworthy engagement with Fulbright exchange participants.

From a new media music composition inspired by time and sound and an exhibition on African American fiber art traditions to original research on the childbirth experiences of queer people in America, four UNT professors will be pursuing creative projects in the next year as the 2022-23 Institute for the Advancement of the Arts Faculty Fellows.

Brian F. Wright, an assistant professor of music history in UNT’s College of Music, is working to detail the electric bass’s early history in his book, The Bastard Instrument. The book’s title comes from jazz bassist Monk Montgomery, one of the instrument’s early pioneers, who was initially reluctant to play it.

College of Music alumna Bree Nichols, who earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in voice performance in May, received a Fulbright Research Award to travel to the Czech Republic where she will focus on compiling the first anthology of Czech art songs.
