What is Academic Analytics?

Academic Analytics is a set of business intelligence tools used by universities to support planning and decision-making for their academic and research missions. It provides insights into faculty research activity and supports faculty development.

What is Faculty Insight and what is it used for?

Faculty Insight is a search tool that enables scholars to find experts at their institution and nationally. Scholar profiles are pre-populated with recent activity data sourced from Academic Analytics. This includes articles, books, grants, awards, conference proceedings, and patents. Scholar profiles are also fed to the public-facing. For more information on Faculty Insight, please view the Faculty Insight User Guide.

What data is included in Academic Analytics

Academic Analytics aggregates a comprehensive range of publicly available data on faculty research, including publications, citations, grants, awards, and other scholarly achievements across various disciplines. The database is regularly updated to ensure accuracy and relevance. Additionally, to provide a more complete view of faculty achievements, the platform is supplemented with faculty-entered data from the institutional Faculty Insights system, which captures information not available from external public sources.

Where are the data from Academic Analytics in my profile coming from?
Academic Analytics compiles data from federal, university, and private sources. Article and Conference Proceeding publication data are obtained directly from publishers, using digital object identifiers (DOI®). Citation data are derived via DOI®-to- DOI® linkages based on the literature cited section of published journal articles and conference proceedings. Book data are collected from the British Library catalog and Baker and Taylor, Inc. Grant data are collected from federal granting agencies and select private sources. Patent data are obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the World Intellectual Property Organization. Honorific Award information is derived from publicly available information from national governing societies.
What are the benefits of using Academic Analytics?

Academic Analytics helps universities maintain a competitive edge by identifying strengths, supporting faculty development, and making informed decisions that align with strategic goals. It also enhances transparency in faculty research metrics.

Will department chairs have access to college-level or institutional-level data?

No, department chairs will have access to their own department’s metrics and comparative data through the Academic Analytics portal, but not to other departments’ data. Similarly, college Deans will only have access to their college’s data.

How do we ensure the accuracy of the data in Academic Analytics?

Academic Analytics relies on publicly available data and periodic updates from recognized academic sources. UNT works closely with the platform to ensure data accuracy, but faculty can report discrepancies if they find any inaccuracies in their data.

Can faculty edit their profiles in Faculty Insight?

Faculty can edit their profile name, research summary, research interest, and research keywords from the drop-down menu with the body icon in the top right corner of the page.

How do I manage what is viewable on the public-facing site and Faculty Insight?

Please refer to the Help section of Faculty Insight for the article Managing Your Public Profile

Academic Analytics data does not capture all of the work that I do. How do I add additional activities?

Currently, for UNT faculty, the Faculty Insight data and works published on the Faculty Scholars web page data are supplemented with information that has been entered into the Faculty Insights system.

The faculty member is listed, but is missing information. Why?

Although the databases utilized by Academic Analytics are robust, not all data are captured in the tool. See data source explanations in Academic Analytics FAQ documentation.

Does data from Faculty Insight feed into (other institutional system)?

No.

Is there training available on how to use Faculty Insight?

The Faculty Insight Guide is available to support faculty, staff, and students. Users can learn to manage their research profile and search for scholars with whom to collaborate and find funding that matches their research interests.

How do you determine a scholar's key terms?

Academic Analytics generates a set of key research terms for each scholar by comparing research activity from that individual against all available research activity data. The more often a term appears in a specific scholar’s research activity data, relative to the number of times the term appears in all data in the collection, the more closely associated the term is with the scholar.

Where do funding opportunities come from?

Scholar profile keywords are matched to funding opportunity data from a third-party funding database.  Grant opportunities are updated daily and contain approximately 40,000 open funding opportunities from over 10,000 public and private entities. Funding opportunities may be filtered by using the filter button on the left-hand side.

Is training required to access the Academic Analytics Portal or Faculty Insight?

For the Portal, yes, individuals are required to complete a training session before access to the Academic Analytics Portal is granted. Training may be completed using the provided video training within the Portal or a virtual session, depending on your role within the institution.

For Faculty Insight, no.  All employees at the institution have access to Faculty Insight using their institutional credentials.  Only those faculty provided on the faculty roster will have a profile with prepopulated works.

What is the difference between the Academic Analytics Portal and Faculty Insight?

The Faculty Insight includes data for an individual faculty member. All individual faculty members will have access to their data via Faculty Insight. Faculty should review their data for accuracy and submit requests for correcting omissions or errors from Faculty Insight.

Academic Analytics portal includes data from primarily tenure, tenure-track, and ranked research faculty, using data from publicly available external sources.
