Training determination table

The table below will help determine the training required by the IBC based on the biosafety level and category of materials used.

Training Requirements

If you work with the following
Training Requirements
Frequency

Working with any biological material

•    Initial Biosafety Training
•    Basic Introduction to Biosafety
•    Emergency and Incident Responses to Biohazard Spills and Releases
•    Personal Protective Equipment
•    Hazard Communication

An Initial Training Session is required prior to initiation of work.

Biosafety Retraining as Annual Refresher required thereafter

Recombinant Research Materials

Along with the above training you must also take –
NIH Recombinant DNA Guidelines

An Initial Training Session is required prior to initiation of work

And then every 3 years

Work with Lab-specific biohazardours material

See your Lab Manager/Supervisor/PI for SOP and hands-on-training

An Initial Training Session is required prior to initiation of work.

Refresher required whenever material or processes change
Training must be documented and performed annually.

Shipping and Transport of Regulated Biological Materials

An Initial Training Session is required prior to initiation of work.

Toxin or Select Agent (exempt quantities only)

•    Select Agents, Biosecurity and Bioterrorism
•    USDA Permits
•    Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC)

Contact the Biosafety Officer before working with these agents. An IBC approval must be in place before starting this project or ordering the toxin/Select Agent or undertaking this training
