Texas Leadership Research Scholars (TLRS) Program at UNT


The THECB Texas Leadership Scholars (TLRS) program is a prestigious scholarship initiative supporting outstanding doctoral students at Texas public research universities. At the University of North Texas (UNT), TLRS Scholars receive more than just financial aid; they gain access to a vibrant peer network, dedicated mentoring, and leadership development opportunities.

UNT TLRS Doctoral Scholarship Highlights

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to $18,266 for the 2025–2026 academic year (subject to annual adjustment by the THECB Commissioner)
  • Coverage: Supports housing, food, and other educational expenses
  • Duration: Renewable for up to 3 years while enrolled full-time in a UNT doctoral program
  • Disbursement: Issued in equal parts at the start of each semester through UNT Student Financial Aid

Doctoral students interested in developing their research skills, engaging in community impact, and strengthening their leadership potential are encouraged to attend and learn how to become competitive applicants.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrolled full-time in a research doctoral program at UNT
  • Graduate of a Texas public high school (within the last 10 years) or a Texas higher education institution
  • Demonstrated economic need (e.g., Pell Grant, TEXAS Grant, TEG, or TLS recipient)
  • Applied for available financial aid
  • Nominated by UNT based on merit and leadership potential
