Resources on writing

This guide provides resources for faculty or students looking for help with scholarly writing or scholarly publishing projects.

College and Departmental Research Focused Events

Many research events occur at the departmental or college level; ask your faculty mentors and advisors for updates on opportunities.

Biology Graduate Student Association

The goal of the BGSA is to advocate the interests of Biology graduate students, provide a social networking tool for biology graduate students, promote a closer relationship among new and current graduate students, and to create an environment of support.

College of Engineering

Research and innovation are integral parts to any college, and here at UNT College of Engineering, it’s no exception. With two National Academy members, 11 engineering society fellows, and five NSF CAREER Award winners, along with 94 full-time faculty members and numerous state-of-the-art facilities, we’re able to conduct world-class research that benefits today’s modern world.

Our small but vibrant college has garnered nearly $11 million in research expenditures in 2018-19, and specializes in the areas of digital manufacturing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, autonomous vehicles, and SMART sensing. With a new Additive Manufacturing Lab and a $10 million boost to the Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing, the College of Engineering is poised to make a bigger and better impact in local communities and around the globe.

Research like the $2.5 million NSF grant to tackle food insecurity is what makes UNT Engineering soar above the rest.

SACNAS student organization

The Purpose of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Sciences (SACNAS) UNT Chapter is to promote the mission of SACNAS and to offer educational and professional development resources and opportunities to students interested in the sciences.

To search for funding to support your research, refer to resources such as the Pivot database and refer to the Pivot online tutorial to learn more.

Fellowships

Consider applying for the prestigious programs, including the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Ford Foundation Fellowship Program, or determine if you are eligible for NIH training opportunities.

Faculty Resources

Add Research to Your Course

A positive pedagogical alternative to a traditional lecture is to add a research, inquiry-based component to your course through course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). If your courses include formal inquiry or methodology information, you may want to incorporate an authentic research component to expand on what you are already teaching with a project. If you would like to discuss how to include research in your course, please contact us at studentresearch@unt.edu for one-on-one consultations.

Find a Student Researcher

If you do not have a student in mind or teach courses at the time, here are some methods to recruit students:

  • Post your research opportunity through the Division of Research and Innovation
  • Ask colleagues to announce the opportunity in relevant courses or with their advisees
  • Post fliers in hallways where students you would like to hire are at frequently
  • Contact former undergraduate researchers or students you are connected with to ask them or for recommendations

If a potential student researcher is less experienced than you hope, but seems to be a good worker, think of other ways to engage them while they complete coursework or other experiences. Other ways to engage these students include student work in your area, short literature reviews for projects, invitations to journal clubs, and meetings with your research team.

Honors College Programs

Undergraduate Research

The UNT Honors College champions research-based undergraduate education in which undergraduates master the rigorous methodologies of their mentors and come to understand the notion of “enquiry.” At the same time, students frequently experience the joy of making original contributions to their fields of study. The Vice President for Research joins the Dean of the Honors College in supporting student engagement in research and creative activity by highlighting the opportunities and resources available.

UNT Scholars Day

Celebrates the work of undergraduate researchers at UNT. All UNT students are encouraged to participate and do not need to be members of the Honors College to present.
