This decision tree is designed to guide UNT faculty in identifying the appropriate type of research agreement based on common research scenarios and to direct them to the correct point of contact.

Answer the questions below to determine which agreement you may need.

 

Do you need to send or receive physical research materials (e.g., mice colony, reagents)?

Yes

→ You need a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA). Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Are you transferring data between institutions for research purposes?

Yes

→ You may need a Data Use Agreement (DUA). Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Do you need to share confidential information with another party before collaboration?

Yes

→ You need a Confidential Disclosure Agreement (CDA). Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Are you licensing UNT intellectual property to another party?

Yes

→ You need an Intellectual Property (IP) License Agreement. Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Do you want to establish general terms and conditions for future research projects?

Yes

→ You need a Master Research Agreement (MRA). Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Are you collaborating with a federal laboratory that will provide resources but no funding?

Yes

→ You need a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Are you planning to collaborate with another institution on a future project/proposal?

Yes

→ You may need a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or Teaming Agreement. Please contact Innovation and Commercialization Office at patents@unt.edu.

Are you receiving financial support from a sponsor to conduct research?

Yes

→ You may need a Sponsored Research Agreement (SRA). Please request a Grants and Contracts Specialist to start the process.

Is your research part of a bigger project funded by the state or federal agency?

Yes

→ You may need an outgoing or incoming Subaward Agreement. Please request a Grants and Contracts Specialist to start the process.

Are you providing research services, such as data analysis or testing, to the other party?

Yes

→ You need a Research Service Agreement (RSA). Please request a Grants and Contracts Specialist to start the process.

Do you have a Master Research Agreement in place and need to initiate a specific project?

Yes

→ You need a Task Order or Work Order. Please request a Grants and Contracts Specialist to start the process.

Are you advising off-campus using your research expertise without conducting experiments?

Yes

→ You need a Research Advisory Agreement (RAA). Please request a Grants and Contracts Specialist to start the process.

Are you temporarily assigned to a federal agency as a faculty member?

Yes

→ You need an Intragovernmental Personnel Act Assignment (IPA). Please request a Grants and Contracts Specialist to start the process.
