Jantana Keereetaweep (’15), an assistant biochemist in the biology department at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, won the Paul K. Stumpf Award, given to early career scientists, from the International Symposium on Plant Lipids. Keereetaweep was honored for her work in lipids and plant biochemistry at Brookhaven, where she has worked since 2015. She is studying plant lipid biosynthesis to see how it can create more efficient bioenergy production. The oil or lipid-based bioproducts could be used for fuels and raw materials — and, consequently, help combat climate change. She was inspired to study plant biochemistry because of Regents Professor of biological sciences Kent Chapman, who received the lifetime achievement award at the conference.
